Prospect Park CSA in the News!

The Prospect Heights Patch covered our launch, check out the article!

Members can pick up their shares from Fountain Studios (604 Grand Street between Bergen Street and Saint Marks Avenue), a group of artist studios that regularly  hosts gallery shows and other community events.

“We want to highlight the CSA, but also this local neighborhood spot,” Santogade told me.

Santogade said that a fundamental reason for having a CSA is “the idea of creating community.” She worries that although the concept of a CSA is becoming increasingly popular, people often forget the community building aspect of the project.

“This is not just about picking up food,” she said. “It offers a way to get to know your neighborhood and neighbors.”

2011 Prospect Park CSA Share Details

When you purchase a full vegetable share, you receive a substantial assortment of veggies once a week for 22 weeks. You can also purchase a half-share, in which you will pick up your share every other week throughout the 22 week season. We will be coordinating a get-together for folks interested in combining & sharing their half shares (so that two people with bi-weekly shares each can coordinate to have fresh veggies every single week, even with a “bi-weekly” share).

We have two main price tiers, and we can work with you if they both feel like too much. Each tier includes a $10 administrative fee, which our core group uses to buy some basic materials and as a way to subsidize fun activities we offer throughout the year. We accept checks through our online sign-up (in one sum or installments), and we can accommodate food stamp payments in person (please call or email us if you would like to pay with food stamps).

Plan A full share: $530, Plan A half share: $270

Plan B full share: $450, Plan B half share: $230

Please choose Plan A if your household’s combined income is greater than $80,000 (individual income greater than $40,000), or if you feel that you can afford it. By choosing a Plan A share you are helping to subsidize our lower income neighbors, bringing real, healthy food access to more people and ensuring that the “community” aspect of Community Supported Agriculture rings true.

Plan B is for everyone else.

If both Plan A and Plan B feel like more than your household can afford, and/or if you will be using food stamps or cash to pay for your share, please contact us at or at (347) 746-5710 and we will work with you to help you become a member of the Prospect Park CSA.

We are also offering Fruit, Flowers and Eggs to our Vegetable share members! Details below on each.

From the farm: “at Windflower Farm, we grow small quantities of organic strawberries and raspberries. In addition, we partner with other local growers to supply fresh, minimally treated (non-organic) fruit. Fruit shares begin in the early summer with strawberries, cherries, blueberries and raspberries, progress in mid-summer to include peaches, plums, nectarines, and apricots, and conclude in the fall with assorted apples, pears, and cider.”

Fruit: $140 (20 Distributions)

From the farm: “We offer a 10-week share of our own organically grown cut flowers. Flowers vary by the season but have included spice-scented stock, showy sunflowers, Bells of Ireland, campanula, Asiatic lilies, long-lasting lisianthus, China asters, and cockscombs (or “brain flowers” as one young CSA member calls them). Flowers arrive in bouquets or bunches, and packed in a floral sleeve for safe travel.”

Flowers: $120 (10 Distributions)

Our eggs come from Windflower Farm neighbor Elihu Farm. Elihu Farm hens are truly pastured and their eggs are as nutritional and good-for-you as eggs can be. Egg shares include 22 distributions (the entirety of our vegetable share season).

1 dozen/week: $115 (22 distributions)

1/2 dozen/week: $58 (22 distributions)
